Sorrow for McGwire I feel very sorry for Mark McGwire. He is a man that was blessed with an inordinate ability to hit a baseball a long ways. I have never met Mark McGwire, but he also seems like a decent human being that cares about his family and others. I feel sorry for him because at some point in his life he made a decision that will continue to haunt him for the rest of it. He decided to cheat by taking a drug; steroids. It really does not matter why he took them. Taking them was illegal and wrong. It does not matter how many others were taking them at the time and if management and others were turning their head the other way or not. Taking steroids was wrong. I feel sorry for Mark McGwire because he seems to get and take bad advice from others. He took the advice of someone that told him taking steroids was okay and it was going to help him. He took the advice of attorneys who apparently told him not to “talk about the past” during a congressional hearing. He took the advice of a Public Relations firm who apparently told him not to tell the whole truth upon his return to baseball as a coach. I feel sorry for Mark McGwire because he has either convinced himself that if you can tell halve truths or completely lie about something it is okay, as long as you get away with it and/or he has totally convinced himself that taking steroids was okay because others were doing it and they did not help him anyway. I feel sorry for him, because it has to be difficult to live and/or look in the mirror if you’re Mark McGwire. Phoneyism is a difficult trait to carry with you 24/7. I feel sorry for Mark McGwire because it can be argued forever if he deserves to be in Baseball’s Hall of Fame or not. Deep down he has to carry with him if he could have had a career deserving of the Hall of Fame without the use of steroids. I feel sorry for him because he did not remain pure and refuses to come totally clean to baseball and its fans which were very very good to him. He continues to be very selfish in his disregard for what the sport and fans did for him. True, he is not alone. I am not asking for an apology from him or anyone else. I am not demanding he never be let in the Hall or continue in baseball. I want him and others to be totally honest because it is the right thing to do and because it can help others, especially our young people. Every year, thousands of kids start using steroids because they are told and are under the impression it is okay as long as they can get away with it. They want to gain an edge to be a great athlete. To be admired by millions, thousands, or at least in their own schools and community. They are not told and fail to do the research about the horrors of the use of illegal steroids. They are unaware of how they can break down your body, especially later in life, and even cut their life dramatically short. This is not all on Mark McGwire’s shoulders, but he has caused the feeling of betrayal for many. He continues to perpetuate fraud and be selfish when by coming totally clean he could do so much for the sport that was so good to him, and more importantly for our youth and their futures; but most importantly for Mark McGwire. When he does come completely clean, me and others will no longer have to feel sorry for him, but could change that sorrow into admiration. I would like to hear from you!
