|Turnovers Kill Trojans in 2013 Opener
(TV Falls 33-20 to Sumner-Fred.)
You had to like just about everything you saw out of the Turkey Valley
Trojans in its 2013 season opener on the gridiron at home Friday night
(8/30/2013) except the way they turned the ball over and the big pass
plays they gave up to Sumner-Fred..
Those 2 areas did TV in as they fell to the Cougars 33-20 in a
SF scored on 2 long pass plays (76 & 66 yards) in the first half and their
other score in the first half was set-up by a long pass play.
Despite the aerial exploits by the Cougars, Turkey Valley still managed
to be tied 20-20 at intermission behind a balanced running attack.
Ryan Busta making his debut as a starter at the quarterback position
scored the first Trojan TD of the season on a 12 yard run with 6:42 left
in the first quarter to knot the game at 6-6.
It was an impressive first drive of the season against a squad that
looked larger, had about twice as many players and come from a
school with about twice the number of students.
TV actually took the lead after a Riley Meirick interception thwarted the
next Cougar drive to set-up a Turkey Valley drive that was climaxed on
a 2-yard plunge by Luke Kuennen early in quarter 2.
Just a few plays later SF struck with its second long TD pass play of
the game, this one covering 66 yards and with the PAT kick took the
lead back at 13-12.
The Cougars would pad the lead after a 26-yard TD and another
PAT-kick for a 20-12 lead with 3:57 to go in the half.
The Trojans would promptly march down the field and score on an
11-yard Luke Kuennen run with 1:36 left. Justin Kime with a student
body left run scored the 2-point conversion to tie the game 20-20.
A good size Trojan crowd was treated to the excellent sounds of a
small and young, but very talented Turkey Valley marching band.
Probably the smallest in numbers in school history, but still bringing
the love of performance to put on entertaining show.
On a night that turned out to be much cooler then many had expected,
after another near record setting day of heat in the area, The TV
faithful were feeling good as the second half began.
The Trojans received the kick-off and were beginning to move the ball
again when the feeling a balloon must have when pricked with a pin
came over the Turkey Valley crowd as the Trojans coughed up the ball
in their own territory giving the Cougars the break they needed.
SF took advantage and would score what would prove to be the
game-winning touchdown with 9:50 left to play in the third period to
gain a lead they would never relinquish, 26-20.
Turkey Valley just never again could get it going offensively.
The defense played extremely well holding SF completely in check the
rest of the game. The Cougars scored the final points of the game late
with an interception returned 60 yards to pay dirt for the final 33-20
Trojans have 1 final non-district tune-up next Friday (9/6/2013) against
its #1 rival over the last 50+ years the South Winneshiek Warriors. It is
a game that holds some added interest since it may be the last varsity
football game ever played between the 2 schools.
With South Winneshiek holding its own enrollment wise and Turkey
Valley dipping dramatically over the last several years, possibly
forcing TV to go to 8-man next year, while SW remains in the 11-player
game, the 2 may never meet again in football on the varsity level.
The game is at Turkey Valley @ 7 p.m.

|For the most part
The Defense Played Well!
You take away 3 big pass plays and 2 turnovers that led to
Sumner-Fred scores and Turkey Valley pitched a shutout.
You can't of course!!!
|A large part of the defense success came from
Riley (Bucheit), Riley (Busta), and Riley (Meirick)!
Above Riley Busta (50-with the ankles) and
Riley Bucheit (77-flying through the air)
combine to hold the runner with a short gain.
|This time it is Riley Bucheit (above) putting the pressure on the QB
forcing an errant throw so Riley Meirick (below) can get the pick.
This was a very crucial play in the game.
It helped set-up the TD that gave the Trojans a First Half lead.
|If Forrest Gump was writing this caption, he would probably say, "The
beginning of a high school football season is like a box of chocolates,
you are never really sure what you are going to get."
TV Coach Mark Scott wasn't sure what he was going to get this
season, but after the opener has to be mostly pleased with what he
saw. Minimizing mistakes is definitely something they can work on.
|It was nice to see Austin made it back for
the opener. After years as a chief
manager, he got to see how it feels on the
other side of the fence
