Trojans advance to Semi-Finals in District

It took almost as long to get there as it did for the Turkey Valley
Trojans to upend Starmont in district play in Winthrop Tuesday, 11-1 in
a game that was called after 5 innings because of the 10-run rule.

Trojans went right to work scoring 7-times in the first inning with the
first 8 batters reaching base against Colton Janseen normally the
closer but put into a starters role by Starmont Coach Duane Lowry to
try and slow down the high scoring Turkey Valley
Michael Novotny, Jordon Mitchell, Marshall Rosenbaum, and Jordan
Schmitt all hit safely in the first frame, but it was gifts from Starmont
that paved the way to the big inning with three walks(Ben Novotny,
Brooks Milbrandt, and Michael Novotny), a hit batter(Dalton Hackman),
and a couple of errors.

Trojans went scoreless in the second, but erupted for 4 in the third
with the big blow a bases loaded triple by Brooks Milbrandt with Ryan
Busta, Jordan Schmitt, Ben Novotny, and Jordan Mitchell all scoring in
the inning.

Jordan Schmitt dominated from the hill giving up only 1-run, while
striking out 8 in the 5-inning game.

Trojans plan to send Jordan Mitchell to the mound in the next round
on Thursday night back in East Buc Country In Winthrop at 7 p.m.
against Edgewood-Colesburg who beat East Buc.

faithful that made the trip, which was much appreciated by the players
and coaches.

Trojans rout EdCo, Advance to District Final

You knew coming in that Edgewood-Colesburg was a very They were a
team that was inconsistent all season long and certainly showed it in
the 15-5 pounding in 5 innings they took from The Turkey Valley
Trojans in the District Semi-Finals in Winthrop on Thursday (7/12/2012).

EdCo came out in the top of the first and jumped all over Jordan
Mitchell and 4 hits, a walk and a Trojan error later had a 4-0 lead.  The
Trojans followed in the bottom of the first by going 3-up and 3-down.
To say the least, things didn't look good for the 25-12 TV squad facing
the 13-18 team.

How things changed, and in a hurry.  The top of the second, EdCo went
3-up and 3-down as Mitchell began to settle in.  Mitchell admitted after
the game he had a bit of the jitters in the first and it affected the way
he pitched.

Verlander in the first inning suddenly couldn't throw strike.  He hit
Mitchell on the very first pitch of the inning and walked the next batter
Brooks Milbrandt on 4-pitches.  After 2 more balls he finally threw a
strike to Adam Schaufenbuel and got a ground out and looked like he
might regain his composure and pitch out of it with little damage.

That's when an excellent piece of hitting by Marshall Rosenbaum who
took an outside pitch to right seem to drain all the confidence out of
Kluesner and his teammates and the Trojan domination had begun.
Dalton Hackman and Jordan Schmitt walked and Michael Novotny hit a
ground ball to short that should have easily ended the inning, but the
shortstop threw the ball away allowing 2-runs to score and the rout
was on.

The next 6 Trojans would hit safely.  Ben Novotny singled, Jordan
Mitchell doubled, Brooks Milbrandt missed an HR by inches and
settled for a double, Adam Schaufenbuel singled and the inning would
end when Milbrandt was thrown out at the plate with TV leading 8-4.

Starting off the third, Rosenbaum singled, Dalton Hackman singled for
the sixth consecutive hit, the hit-string only ended when Ryan Busta
was called upon to sacrifice and did his job beautifully, followed by a
sacrifice fly by Jordan Schmitt, a double by Michael Novotny, Ben
Novotny got hit, singles by Mitchell and Milbrandt, an error and finally
an out that counted against the Trojans batting average when the
left-fielder made a spectacular diving catch to rob Rosenbaum of yet
another hit.

If you were keeping score, over a period of 14 batters, Turkey Valley
was 10 for 11 with 3 doubles a hit batter a couple of sacrifices and an
error.  Throw in the 2 prior at-bats when you had a walk and an error
and TV had 16 consecutive productive at-bats.  The out was that
spectacular catch.

TV added the runs necessary to make it a 5-inning contest in the
bottom of the fourth when Dalton Hackman singled, Ryan Busta was
safe on an error and Michael Novotny doubled in the 2-runs.

After the first, Mitchell pitched very well yielding only 1-hit and a
meaningless run in the fifth.

Waiting in the wings for the District Championship is Kee High a 5-1
winner over Dunkerton.  The 2-teams recently split a double-header to
end up co-champions in the Upper Iowa Conference.

The rubber game has far more meaning with a District Championship at
stake when they clash at 7 p.m.
on Saturday in the game switched
at the last minute to Waukon.
The winner will be 1-game away from a
State Tournament berth.

On the video immediately below hear pitcher Jordan Mitchell and
Dalton Hackman talk about their individual and team performances.

complete story about the
2012 Turkey Valley Trojan Baseball Team)

The old baseball adage, "Good pitching beats good hitting" held up
when Matt Heiderscheit and the Kee High Hawks defeated The Turkey
Valley Trojans, 6-0 in the District Championship Game in Waukon on
Saturday night (7/14/2012).

Heiderschiet kept the Trojans off-balance all night spotting his
fast-ball and curve-ball to perfection.  It was virtually impossible to hit
the ball solid.  Only Adam Schaufenbuel and Dalton Hackman managed
to collect hits off him, both in the fifth.  Heiderschiet did not walk a
batter, while striking out 5 in his 6 innings of work.

It's even more amazing how he dominated The Trojans, one of the
top-hitting Class A teams in the state, when you take into account he
had pitched 6 innings just 2 days earlier and another 4, 4 days ago and
was allowed to pitch only the 6 he did under the state rule that allows
only 16 innings in a week.

On the offensive end, Kee did not hit the ball much better but took
advantage of 4 walks, 4 hit batters and the ability to manufacture runs
with the bunt game and clever base-running, while forcing the
opponent into mistakes.

This was not Gene Schultz's, the winningest high school coach ever,
first rodeo and it showed.  Through practice and training he pulls just
about every bit of talent out of his players and instills in them the
desire and knowledge to win the big games.

Kee manufactured a couple of runs in the first with a walk, bunt single,
stolen base, ground out and bloop single.  It was a clinic in how to
manufacture runs.

Some questionable calls  helped Kee add 2 more in the third when the
home plate umpire awarded first base to the first 3 hitters of the
inning for being hit-by-the-pitch.  At least 2 of them were questionable.

Kee got its other 2 in the seventh with a combination of hits, errors,
walks, and calls.

The careers are over for a very talented senior class.  On the ball
diamond they seemingly had it all; power, speed, pitching, defense,
and a love for the game.  When we watch The Trojans in all sports next
school year it will not be the same without Jordan Mitchell, Jordan
Schmitt, Brooks Milbrandt, Ben Novotny, Marshall Rosenbaum, and
Adam Kriener.

But every year you have to move on.  Although suffering huge loses,
Turkey Valley has a good nucleus to build around in Michael Novotny,
Ryan Busta, Riley Busta, Riley Meirick, and Dalton Hackman who all
played vital roles in the success of this years club.  Jacob Hackman
also saw a lot of action and handled the bat very well.  With 3 or 4
others rising with the ability to play varsity ball, 2013 could turn out to
be another banner year for the Turkey Valley Trojans.
