Eager Young Group
Gets Their Chance on the
TV Boys' Golf Team

The Turkey Valley Boys' Golf Team lost 10
seniors, including its top 6 golfers among
them 4-time all-stater Carson Bruess, so
to say it is a rebuilding season might be a
bit of an under-statement.

Coach John Reicks, like the
young men are looking forward to the
campaign with a great deal of enthusiasm.

Reicks comments on his team strength:
"We have a group of hard-working, eager
golfers that are eager to get better.  This
is a good group of kids that have waited
patiently behind last year's strong senior
class for their chance and are very

On weaknesses:  "We do lack varsity
experience and will need to develop
consistent play from meet to meet.  Our
overall course management and the short
game are a couple of areas we need to
improve on.  Also, the fact that we have
no senior leadership is a weakness"

Excellent Golfers Return
for TV Girls

The numbers are not that plentiful with
only 6 on the squad, but it is an
experience group with 3 seniors and 4
letterwinners returning for the Turkey
Valley Girls' Golf Team.

Toril Einwalter and Jamee Blazek are a
pair of senior letterwinners that will
"excellent leadership", according
to Coach John Reicks.

Sophomores Josie Einwalter and Nicole
Meirick are a couple of more returning
letterwinners and Shelbee Winter
provides additional senior depth.

Taylor Novotny is a newcomer and is the
only other golfer on the squad.

"Our golfers love the game and that is a
definite strength along with their desire
to work hard and the eagerness to
, according to Reicks.

On weaknesses:
 "We need to develop
our #5 and #6 golfers and we lack depth."

The recent rain and snow is keeping the
team indoors and making it difficult for
the young golfers to improve their games
before the first meet on April 4th at
Jackson Heights against West Central
(Weather Permitting, of course)

Girls win Boys Lose in the
first action of the season @ Clayton Ridge

It was the first time all season the Turkey Valley Golfers were on the
course and as expected a young inexperienced boys team struggled
and lost, while a more experienced girls team won.

Comments from Coach John Reicks:

"This was a typical first meet of the year other than the fact that this
was the first time on a course this spring for our kids.
I saw a lot of things that we did well, and of course a lot of things that
we need to work on to improve as the season progresses.

The TV girls won 264-267, while the boys lost by a 181-225 score.

Nicole Meirick was runner-up medalist with a 61 to lead the girls. Toril
Einwalter fired a 64, Robin Kime carded a 69, and Jamee Blazek added
a 70.

Junior Jacob Hackman led the boys with a 55, Justin Izer shot a 56,
newcomer Ryan Busta carded a 57 as did Tom Reicks (57).

With the lack of practice time due to the weather, we did okay. I am
sure that the kids were just as happy to be outside on a nice day as I
was rather than hitting plastic whiffle balls into the nets inside the
gym. We used this meet more as a practice than anything else knowing
that  the weather has to cooperate sooner or later.
I was especially happy with the play of our newcomers as they finished
strong despite some early round setbacks."

Finally The Trojans Get on a Golf Course

The weather this spring has not been conducive for doing just about
anything outdoors, including playing golf.  Despite this fact the Turkey
Valley Golf Teams were able to show some dramatic improvement over
the last time they were on the course 2 weeks ago as the girls shaved
27 strokes and the boys 26 strokes in their meet Monday (4/22/2013) in
Ossian with South Winneshiek.

The Warriors won the girls action 206-237 and the boys 151-199.

Coach John Reicks was very happy with the teams' improvement:

EVERYONE on the course tonight improved their score from two
weeks ago--some rather dramatically!

Justin Izer led the boys' team with a 46, Tom Reicks shot a 48, Ryan
Busta fired a 51, and Jacob Hackman added a 54.
Lots of positives up and down the line-up. The best thing I saw was
that the kids WANT to get better.

Senior veteran Toril Einwalter carded a 56, Nicole Meirick and Taylor
Novotny added  59's. and Jamee Blazek shot a 63 to lead the girls.
Both Taylor and Josie (Einwalter) dropped almost 20 strokes from the
meet two weeks ago, and it really helps to have Robin (Kime) and
Shelbee (Winter) on the roster this season.
Our four senior girls provide great leadership for our younger kids.

Trojan Boys upend Central @ Jackson Heights

The boys won the thriller over Central 181-182

Toril Einwalter was also a runner-up medalist as she carded a 52, but
the girls fell to Central 216-231.

John Reicks on the Boys
"It was nice to get a win and Justin was the runner-up medalist with a
42. I was happy for him.
Hole # 9 haunted us a little as Justin carded a double bogey on the
hole and Jacob shot a triple.
We need to learn how to finish strong as both boys are capable of
shooting even lower.
Our freshmen boys are also starting to put things together on the
course as well."

On the Girls

"The wind gave us some trouble and we still need to get better with
our putting, but overall the girls gave a solid effort.
We had some tired kids out there tonight but they stuck with it and
didn't give up."

"We still have a lot of work to do before the UIC tournament next

Comments from Coach John Reicks:

"We closed out our season with a consistent effort.
Even with the dismal weather we have had this spring, all the boys
lowered their career average by a significant amount despite the
abbreviated schedule.
With no seniors on the roster, we have a solid nucleus in place
entering the 2014 season. If the kids put forth a solid effort in the
off-season and work hard on their game,
look for a breakout season for the Trojan golf team in 2014"
