Comments From Coach Chris Sullivan
over the Valley Tournament Win
we didn't think we executed our sets very
well along with missing numerous
bunnies around the rim.  In the 3rd
quarter Valley started to get into the paint
and got some easy baskets and led by
four after the third quarter.  In the forth
quarter I thought the kids did a nice job of
keeping their composure when they were
behind and we got some huge baskets
from Ryan Busta.  He had 20 points for us
tonight and seemed too always hit a big
shot when we needed it.  At the end of
the game we missed the front end of a
one-an-one and Valley got a shot from half
court that missed and gave us the 42-40
"Although we were up by four at halftime
win.  We were really happy with the kids
effort tonight for four quarters and we
thought they did an excellent job on the
defensive end.  Anytime you beat a team
twice on their home court it is a great
accomplishment.  We are looking forward
to the game Thursday night at Postville. "

for Pirates as they surge
past Trojans to end the
Turkey Valley Season.

It is a nemesis that has plagued this
group of Trojans ever since they've been
playing basketball and it put an end to the
season on Valentine's Day (Thursday
2/14/2013) at Postville in the 2nd round of
the district tournament.

It's pressure defense!  The Trojans have
difficulty handling pressure and it did
them in, 53-28, in a game that was close
throughout the first half.  Postville led
26-20 at intermission.

Turkey Valley actually led at the end of the
first quarter 11-9, but the game seemed to
turn about midway through the 2nd period
when back-to-back turnovers forced by
the pressure resulted in 5 quick Pirate
points and they were well on their way to
an easy win.

Postville kept turning the pressure up a
notch every few minutes in the 2nd half
and as they did the Trojans kept turning it
over with greater frequency and were
able to score only 8 points in the second
half and just 2 in the 4th quarter.

There's always a bright spot if you look
hard enough and in this game you didn't
have to look very hard to see the silver
lining in the play of sophomore Ethan
Throndson, seeing his first varsity action
and rising to the occasion with solid play.

Throndson not only did an admiral job of
handling the pressure when called upon
by Coach Chris Sullivan, but he also
scored the final 4 points the Trojans
would score in this game and this season.

Riley Bucheit also had a good game,
leading the scoring with 12 points. It was
his foul trouble that ultimately did TV in.

Bucheit picked up foul #4 with 2 minutes
left in the third quarter and contributed
very little the rest of the way. He was
pulled right after the 4th foul and quickly
fouled out with 3:45 left in the game when
re-inserted.

Postville  witnessed first hand the TV
victory over Valley in the first round on
Monday night and identified what they
had to do and went out and did it.  Ryan
Busta who scored 20 points against Valley
was shutout and got off very few shots in
this game.

Trojans lose only 1 senior, Jacob
Hackman, who was still standing at the
end.  Nic Schaufenbuel another senior
was still on the team, but on the DL with
an injury.

Turkey Valley finished the season 3-18
under second year coach Chris Sullivan,
while Postville advances down the
tournament trail with a semi-final district
game on Monday against West Central a
45-44 winner over Kee.
They had a great career cheering, but sadly 3 of the Trojan basketball
cheerleaders saw their last action at the game in Postville;  The 3
seniors are (far left)
Emily Elsbernd, (middle) Regan Schmitt,
and (far right)
Toril Einwalter.  We'll miss 'em, but they'll no doubt
be successful in whatever paths they choose.
One for the scrapbook!

tournament win @ Valley and knew what was necessary to stop Turkey
Valley.  They did not allow
Ryan Busta (above) any room to operate
after watching him torch Valley with 20 points, Postville was able to
hold him to zero points and few shots.
They also knew pressure "D" wasn't handled well by TV and applied it
with increasing force as the game progressed.
The Postville coaches had a game plan and the players executed it!
Riley Bucheit (above)
was the only consistent offense Turkey Valley had all night leading
team in scoring with 12 points (4 in each of the first 3 quarters).  When
play you knew it would be tough for the Trojans to mount a comeback
Give the Trojan Fans Credit
despite the challenging season and
having to travel to both tournament games,
Turkey Valley had more fans in attendance
than the home team both nights.

Comments from Coach Chris Sullivan
" In the 2nd quarter we didn't locate
shooters and they got a lot of clean looks
and we trailed at halftime by six points.  In
the first half we thought our execution
was poor, and were fortunate to only be
down six at halftime.  In the 3rd quarter
Postville went to a 1-3-1 half court trap
and we couldn't figure out how to take
care of the ball.  Postville ran away with
the game in the second half by forcing us
into turnovers and leading to easy
baskets for them on the other end.  We
thought the kids got outplayed tonight in
the second half and weren't locked in
enough for a district basketball game to
get a win"
Trojan Boys Advance in
Tournament, 42-40 @
Valley

It's been a tough year for the Turkey
Valley Boy's Basketball team, but suddenly
they have a 2-game winning streak going,
and at the right time of the season.

Ryan Busta took control late in the
contest and powered the Trojans to a
42-40 victory over Valley in the first round
of tournament play at Valley on Monday
(2/11/2013) night in what is more than
likely the last varsity basketball game to
ever be played in the Valley Gym.

Busta hit a huge 3-pointer that fell
through the net with 2:20 left to play to
give Turkey Valley the lead for good.

The junior guard with his career best
game scored the final 6-points for TV with
the 3 a 2 and a free throw and had 20
points for the game.

It was a see-saw game that saw Turkey
Valley in control early leading it 13-9 at the
end of the first quarter and 19-15 at the
half.

However, Valley emerged with a hot third
quarter and it looked like they were
primed for a sterling finish taking a 30-26
lead into the final period.

Busta and The Trojans would not be
denied as they finished strong to advance
in the tournament with a Thursday night
appearance at Postville at 7 p.m.

The Pirates who drew a first round bye
were in attendance scouting the game.

Postville won the regular season meeting
with Turkey Valley at Postville just before
the holiday break, 56-37.
